Ceramispheres
The production of the ceramic balls started at the beginning of the MFA course. While sitting in the studio, figuring out just what it was I was going to do to kick start a project, I started working with the clay with no particular plan. As I made more, they became the plan.
I had suggested during the interview for the course that I wanted to incorporate clay or ceramic objects into performance. Ceramic balls were my way in.
During my research for this project I remembered something about stone spheres. Digging deeper into this, I found information about neolithic stone balls, mostly discovered in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, but also found in Ireland and Scandinavia. These objects are still challenging archaeologists as to their purpose, but are objects that fit in the hand and some have unusual markings. It is not known if they are practical or ritual, a weapon on a stonemasons business card. these objects are currently been scanned and researched at AOC Archaeology in Scotland.
I have used my ceramispheres in performance and exhibitions. During performance, I have gifted some to passers-by. They have been juggled, rolled, arranged and washed.
